THẾ NÀO LÀ HẠNH PHÚC LỨA ÐÔI

ImageHạnh phúc lứa đôi là hạnh phúc có được giữa hai người yêu nhau. Mỗi người cảm thấy hài lòng, được hiểu, được thông cảm và nâng đỡ bởi người kia. Mỗi người tự xem việc đem lại hạnh phúc và sự thăng tiến của người kia là quan trọng và sẵn sàng phục vụ người mình yêu. Ðịnh nghĩa này áp dụng cho cả người dị tính luyến ái (tình yêu giữa hai người khác phái) và người đồng tính luyến ái (tình yêu giữa hai người cùng phái).

Với định nghĩa như vậy, tôi nghĩ quý độc giả đã thấy rõ tại sao hạnh phúc lứa đôi phải là một sự lựa chọn mà không thể là một sự bắt buộc. Hôn nhân có thể là một sự bắt buộc tùy quan niệm của xã hội và gia đình, nhưng để có hạnh phúc lứa đôi, sự kết hợp phải là một tự nguyện nối kết bởi tình yêu, sau đó sợi giây liên hệ được vun xới bởi những nỗ lực không ngừng nhằm tìm hiểu nhau để nâng đỡ tinh thần và giúp đỡ nhau tiến bộ trong đời.

Nếu hạnh phúc cá nhân là một điều khó tìm thì hạnh phúc lứa đôi còn khó tìm hơn nữa. Phải có hai người, và cả hai người đều cảm thấy hạnh phúc thì mới gọi là hạnh phúc lứa đôi được. Có những lứa đôi trong đó một người cảm thấy rất thoải mái và hài lòng, trong khi người kia thì lắc đầu ngán ngẩm hoặc âm thầm chịu đựng. Trường hợp này có thể giải thích là một người đã hy sinh hạnh phúc của mình cho người kia. Có rất nhiều gia đình Việt Nam trong đó người đàn bà phải nhẫn nhục hy sinh cho chồng cho con, theo truyền thống Á Ðông.

Tôi cố tình phân biệt những danh từ Tình Yêu Lãng Mạn, Tình Yêu Chân Thật, Hạnh Phúc Lứa Ðôi và Hôn Nhân, vì chúng có những ý nghĩa hoàn toàn khác biệt:

• Tình Yêu Lãng Mạn (romantic love) là giai đoạn đầu tiên của tình yêu, khi hai người mới bắt đầu rung động, cảm thấy hợp nhãn, để ý tới nhau. Nếu sự xúc động này mãnh liệt thì thường được gọi là tiếng sét ái tình. Trong giai đoạn này hai người yêu nhau qua những tưởng tượng và mơ mộng của chính mình, mà sự lôi cuốn của dục tình điều khiển bởi các kích thích tố, đóng vai trò quan trọng. Tôi đã phân tích kỹ giai đoạn này trong Hành Trang Vào Ðời Tập I, chương Tình Yêu.

• Tình Yêu Chân Thạât (true love) là giai đoạn sau cùng khi hai người đã đạt được sự thông cảm và hiểu nhau, yêu nhau vì chính con người thật của nhau. Ðây mới là một tình yêu bền vững. Tiến sĩ Goldberg định nghĩa tình yêu chân thực như sau: yêu nhau có nghĩa là biết và yêu con người thật của nhau. Con người thật này bao gồm các đặc điểm tốt và xấu. Thấy được trái ấu đen đủi, méo mó, xấu xí nhưng vẫn yêu, chứ không phải nhất quyết cho rằng trái ấu tròn. Mù quáng không chịu thấy những khuyết điểm của người mình yêu cũng như mơ mộng tưởng tượng gán cho người yêu những đặc tính mà họ không có, là hai yếu tố chính điều khiển tình yêu lãng mạn. Tình yêu chân thật, do đó đòi hỏi thời gian và thử thách, nhất là đợi khi lửa lòng lắng dịu, thực tế phơi bày, mỗi người nhìn rõ người yêu của mình với những điểm tốt xấu hầu biết cách cư xử. Tình yêu chân thật là tình yêu đã trải qua thử thách chứ không thể một sớm một chiều mà có được. Sau đây là tiến trình của một mối tình từ giai đoạn tình yêu lãng mạn đến tình yêu chân thật:

Cô A và anh B gặp nhau tại một buổi tiệc liên hoan tất niên trong trường. Anh B là trưởng ban văn nghệ, đảm trách phần văn nghệ giúp vui cho buổi liên hoan. Cô A trình diễn phần đơn ca buổi tối hôm đó. Hai người khi mới gặp đã có cảm tình với nhau ngay. Anh B thật hào hoa phong nhã, thật nhiều kinh nghiệm, và nhất là, anh làm việc dễ dàng với tất cả mọi người, từ ban nhạc cho đến các ca sĩ, lúc nào anh cũng giữ được vẻ điềm tĩnh và có những quyết định chính xác khiến chương trình văn nghệ xảy ra thông suốt trong bầu không khí vui vẻ và hợp tác của tất cả mọi người. Cô A thật xinh tươi trong chiếc áo dài thời trang tha thướt và vẻ thùy mị cố hữu của người con gái Á Ðông. Cô lại tình cờ hát bài hát mà anh B vốn rất yêu thích. Mối tình bắt đầu khi anh B đưa cô A về nhà và sau đó hai người hò hẹn, gặp gỡ để tìm hiểu nhau. Hình ảnh đầu tiên nơi anh B đã gây nhiều xao xuyến cho cô A là hình ảnh một người thanh niên vừa có tài lãnh đạo, điều khiển, vừa có một tâm hồn lãng mạn, yêu âm nhạc. Cô vừa phục, vừa nghĩ rằng cô và anh có một điểm chung là yêu thích văn nghệ. Anh là mẫu người cô mong đợi, là một hoàng tử của lòng mà cô hằng mơ mộng. Anh B xúc động với vẻ thùy mị dịu dàng đầy nữ tính của cô A. Thời gian trôi qua, hai người thân nhau hơn, dành thì giờ nhiều cho nhau và tìm hiểu nhau nhiều hơn từ những ý thích đến những thói quen hay tật xấu. Cô A bắt đầu thấy những sinh hoạt cộng đồng của anh B là mất thì giờ, nhất là qua những sinh hoạt này mà có nhiều cô gái khác cũng có cảm tình và muốn tiến đến với anh. Cô cảm thấy ghen tức và không muốn anh B tham gia nhiều những sinh hoạt này nữa mà chỉ giới hạn trong việc quen biết và chăm sóc cho cô. Cô bắt đầu cằn nhằn và tỏ ý không vui, đôi khi còn ra mặt phản đối khi anh B nhận lời tham gia một sinh hoạt cộng đồng. Anh B cảm thấy cô A cản trở những ý thích và tự do của anh, và bắt đầu khó chịu khi cô A khóc lóc hay hờn dỗi. Nhiều khi, chỉ vì không muốn cô A cản trở hay khóc lóc mà anh có những quyết định đơn phương không hỏi ý kiến cô. Anh bắt đầu thấy cô khó tính và hay than phiền thay vì thùy mị như trước. Thêm vào đó, anh bắt đầu thấy những điểm xấu khác của cô mà anh không vừa ý, như chưng diện hơi nhiều, mất nhiều thì giờ chăm sóc quần áo, ăn mặc thay vì học hành hay chăm sóc việc nhà. Cô còn thích la cà với các bạn gái để bàn về thời trang và các ca sĩ hoặc tài tử thay vì đọc sách để mở mang kiến thức. Hai người bắt đầu cãi vả, giận hờn, mỗi người đều chỉ trích những tật xấu của người kia cũng như đặt điều kiện đòi hỏi người kia phải sửa đổi… Sau một thời gian căng thẳng, hai người nhận ra rằng vẫn thương nhau và không thể chia tay nhau, họ tìm gặp lại nhau và bắt đầu tập chấp nhận nhau. Anh B cho biết sinh hoạt cộng đồng là niềm vui của anh, là lý tưởng của anh. Cô A bắt đầu chấp nhận, và tập bỏ tính ghen tuông của mình. Những lúc có thể, cô theo anh B trình diễn văn nghệ. Cô cũng có thể để anh B sinh hoạt một mình nếu thời khóa biểu của cô không cho phép. Anh B cũng thôi không chế nhạo cô A là thiếu chiều sâu, sống hời hợt chạy đua theo vật chất và hào nháng bên ngoài. Anh chấp nhận cô mặc dầu không đồng ý với cô, và thôi không ép buộc cô phải đọc sách này sách nọ. Có những lúc anh gặp hoàn cảnh khó khăn, cô A vẫn an ủi, nâng đỡ tinh thần cho anh mà không phàn nàn hay áp lực anh phải làm theo ý cô hoặc chê bai chỉ trích anh. Thời gian trôi qua, càng ngày hai người càng biết thêm tính tình, ý thích của nhau cũng như phương cách đối phó với cuộc đời, với hoàn cảnh khó khăn. Họ hoàn toàn tôn trọng quyết định của nhau, và luôn luôn sát cánh bên nhau để nâng đỡ tinh thần và giúp đỡ lẫn nhau.

• Hạnh Phúc Lứa Ðôi: điều kiện để có hạnh phúc lứa đôi là tình yêu chân thật. Nhưng tình yêu chân thật một mình không đủ để đem lại hạnh phúc lứa đôi. Những yếu tố khác như phương cách thông đạt, tìm hiểu tánh tình của nhau để biết cách cư xử hay chiều chuộng, sự gắn bó hết mình cho người mình yêu, thái độ tích cực đối với hạnh phúc của người yêu, cùng nhau trải qua những thăng trầm của đời sống, nâng đỡ, thông cảm nhau mà không tìm cách thay đổi nhau, cách cư xử đối với bạn bè của nhau và gia đình hai bên, phương cách dung hòa những dị biệt, là những thử thách mà hai người phải vượt qua để đạt được hạnh phúc lứa đôi. Trong hạnh phúc lứa đôi, mỗi người cảm thấy mình được tự do theo đuổi mộng ước của mình. Sự hiện diện của người yêu làm mình vui hơn chứ không làm mình bị trì kéo. Có khi hai người có những sự khác biệt không hóa giải được thì mỗi bên đều phải nhượng bộ một phần. Sự nhượng bộ này đến từ sự hy sinh để bảo vệ hạnh phúc lứa đôi mà mỗi bên tự nguyện làm, chứ không phải đến từ sự đe dọa hay do sợ hãi mà làm.

• Hôn nhân: hôn nhân là một thực thể hoàn toàn biệt lập. Mặc dù thông thường, tình yêu chân thật thường tiến đến hôn nhân, nhưng điều này không luôn luôn xảy ra. Có người sống với nhau cả đời rất hạnh phúc mà không tiến đến hôn nhân. Có người tiến đến hôn nhân vì những lý do khác hơn là vì tình yêu. Trên thực tế, những trường hợp này không hiếm. Như trường hợp sau đây của thi sĩ …., lấy vợ để trả thù hay để đỡ lạnh lòng:

Thôi thế từ nay em lấy chồng Anh về lấy vợ thế là xong Vợ anh không đẹp bằng em mấy Anh lấy cho anh đỡ lạnh lòng

Ðộng lực đưa đến hôn nhân có thể là một sự đổi chác, để trả nợ, vì lý do chính trị như trường hợp Huyền Trân công chúa bị gả sang Chiêm Thành để đổi lấy hai châu Ô và Lý. Hôn nhân cũng có thể là một phương cách tìm người giúp việc không công (như cảm tưởng của cô Loan trong tiểu thuyết Ðoạn Tuyệt của Nhất Linh). Hôn nhân là một hành động kết hợp có tính cách pháp lý, xã hội, tôn giáo và gia đình, là một thử thách đáng kể đối với hạnh phúc lứa đôi. Có nhiều cặp sống chung rất hạnh phúc khi chưa cưới, nhưng lại không chịu nổi những thử thách do hôn nhân đem lại. Nhiều người còn chua chát cho rằng hôn nhân giết chết tình yêu.

NHỮNG ÐIỀU KIỆN ÐỂ CÓ HẠNH PHÚC LỨA ÐÔI

Với định nghĩa của hạnh phúc lứa đôi như trên, chúng ta có thể thấy một người muốn có hạnh phúc lứa đôi, cần phải có những đặc tính như sau:

• Biết yêu, biết cảm thấy lòng mình rung động trước một người khác. Cảm giác này là một sự quyến luyến về tinh thần lẫn thể chất đối với một đối tượng ngoài mình, không phải là mình. Cảm giác này có thể ngắn hạn hay kéo dài một thời gian lâu. Cảm giác này có thể nhẹ nhàng, lãng đãng hoặc mãnh liệt và nồng cháy, có thể khởi đầu là một tình bạn, có thể khởi đầu là một tiếng sét ái tình nóng bỏng và cuồng nhiệt.

• Biết quan tâm đến người yêu của mình để tìm hiểu và phục vụ hầu đem lại hạnh phúc cho người yêu. Biết yêu, biết rung động và quyến luyến mà không tiến thêm một mức nữa là quan tâm đến đời sống và nhu cầu của người mình yêu, thì người biết yêu này cũng chỉ yêu mơ mộng mà không tiến đến hạnh phúc lứa đôi được. Những dòng thơ sau đây của thi sĩ Nguyễn Bính đã nói lên những tình cảm chỉ dừng lại ở mức độ rung động mà thôi:

Nhà nàng ở cạnh nhà tôi Cách nhau cái dậu mùng tơi xanh rờn Hai người sống giữa cô đơn Nàng như cũng có nỗi buồn giống tôi Giá đừng có dậu mồng tơi Thế nào tôi cũng sang chơi thăm nàng Tôi chiêm bao rất nhẹ nhàng……

Anh chàng trong bài thơ này mượn cớ có cái dậu mùng tơi cách trở nên không sang thăm nàng được, đủ biết anh đứng ở vị trí nào trong hạnh phúc lứa đôi. Quý bạn đọc phái nữ thế nào cũng có bạn thấy loại đàn ông này không hiếm: bạn biết là anh ta thích bạn qua cái nhìn, qua nụ cười và sự quyến luyến, có khi gọi điện thoại hàng ngày, ấy thế mà chưa bao giờ mở lời mời bạn đi chơi. Có anh có thể tiến xa hơn, là mời bạn đi chơi đều đều, cho qua một cơn vui, xong mạnh ai về nhà nấy, chẳng bao giờ tha thiết đến việc tìm hiểu tâm tình bạn, nhu cầu và ước muốn của bạn hay bàn đến việc tiến xa hơn ngoài việc giải trí vui chơi chốc lát. Có người sống chung với bạn nữa, ấy thế mà hình như anh ta chỉ sống chung với bạn vì sợ cô đơn, vì cần người chia tiền phòng, chia tiền điện nước, vì những tiện nghi thực tế, để giải quyết vấn đề sinh lý, nhưng anh ta quả thật không hề biết bạn là ai, bạn có những sở thích gì, thích món ăn gì, thích màu sắc gì, có những thói quen gì, và nhất là, bạn ao ước những gì trong cuộc sống lứa đôi.

Mức độ hiểu nhau nhiều ít đòi hỏi thời gian và phương cách, và là một tiến trình kéo dài cả đời người, do đó thiện chí và sự cố gắng là hai yếu tố quan trọng để phân biệt một người không quan tâm, không có ý muốn tìm hiểu với một người cố gắng tìm hiểu mà chưa thành công.

Tôi nhớ cuốn phim nổi tiếng Giant, trong đó hai đại tài tử Rock Hudson và Elizabeth Taylor đóng vai một cặp vợ chồng trải qua từ lúc hai người gặp nhau, yêu nhau, lấy nhau cho đến khi có con, nuôi con trưởng thành và dựng vợ gả chồng cho con. Hai người sống với nhau mấy chục năm, cùng trải qua biết bao những thăng trầm của đời sống, trong đó có cả những diễn biến chính trị và xã hội như vấn đề kỳ thị người da đen. Ấy thế mà một hôm, ông chồng Rock Hudson đã làm bà vợ Liz Taylor sửng sờ vì ngạc nhiên và thán phục khi ông đánh nhau tơi bời với một chủ quán để bênh vực người con dâu da đen của mình khi ông chủ quán này tỏ thái độ kỳ thị ra mặt. Khi bà buông lời ca ngợi ông, ông đã đáp lời "em cũng thế, em là một người đàn bà mà cho dù sống với em cả năm mươi năm đi nữa, anh vẫn thấy còn rất nhiều điều anh cần tìm hiểu". Tìm hiểu nhau là một tiến trình cả đời người, và chính sự quan tâm tìm hiểu này đã làm cho tình yêu thú vị và hào hứng. Sự quan tâm này cũng là sự thể hiện chính xác nhất của một tình yêu chân thật qua thời gian, sau khi giai đoạn Tình Yêu Lãng Mạn đã phai tàn.

• Khuyến khích và giúp đỡ người yêu thăng tiến trong đời sống: hiểu được nhau là một món quà nhiệm mầu, tuyệt diệu và quí giá mà hai người yêu nhau có thể mang đến cho nhau. Giai đoạn kế tiếp là giúp và khuyến khích người mình yêu thực hiện những mộng ước của họ, thể hiện con người họ.

Thí dụ:

Nàng vẫn muốn được trở thành một cô giáo dạy môn lịch sử vì theo nàng, làm việc với các em nhỏ làm nàng thấy trẻ lâu. Hơn nữa, giờ giấc của một giáo sư cho nàng nhiều rảnh rỗi để viết sách, để chăm sóc việc nhà và gần gũi với con cái. Hiểu được điều này đã khiến chàng làm việc nhiều hơn và phụ giúp công việc nhà để nàng có thể đi học thêm mà không phải lo lắng vấn đề tiền bạc. Khi nàng tốt nghiệp, chàng có thể làm ít lại và giao lại công việc nhà mà nàng nay đã vui sướng nhận lãnh. Nàng vui sướng trong công việc, trong sự biết ơn người yêu và hạnh phúc lứa đôi càng thắm thiết hơn lên.

Bài hát "Trăng Sáng Vườn Chè" diễn tả lòng hy sinh, đảm đang của một người vợ lo lắng cho chồng ăn học để rồi khi chàng đỗ đạt, hai người cùng chia sẻ vinh quang, là một thí dụ khác. Ðiểm tế nhị trong câu chuyện này, là nàng biết tâm lý người chồng, nên không phải lúc nào nàng cũng chiều, nàng cũng biết cương quyết cự tuyệt "anh chưa thi đỗ thì chưa động phòng" hầu giúp chồng tập trung vào việc học. Như vậy, hạnh phúc lứa đôi không phải dành cho tất cả mọi người. Nó chỉ dành cho những ai có được những điều trên, hay ít nhất, cố gắng để làm được những điều trên.

Trường hợp của cặp vợ chồng trong phim Giant cho thấy hai người tuy có nhiều khác biệt: nàng thích việc xã hội và nhiều nhạy cảm, tế nhị đối với con cái; chàng thực tế, thích cưỡi ngựa, chăn nuôi, nhưng hai người giữ được sự độc lập của mình và luôn quý trọng lẫn nhau. Ðây là một hạnh phúc lứa đôi có thể gọi là kiểu mẫu.

NHỮNG MỨC ÐỘ CỦA HẠNH PHÚC LỨA ÐÔI

Những điều kiện của hạnh phúc lứa đôi nói trên hiện diện ở nhiều mức độ khác nhau, và do đó, cường độ của hạnh phúc lứa đôi cũng khác nhau. Hai người đạt được mức độ lý tưởng khi mỗi người cảm thấy mức độ mình dâng hiến tương đương với mức độ mình nhận được. Mỗi người có một tiêu chuẩn, một lằn ranh tối thiểu cho sự thoải mái và hạnh phúc. Khi lằn ranh này bị lấn lướt về phía thiệt thòi thì ta sẽ cảm thấy thiếu hạnh phúc và bất mãn. Phản ứng của mỗi người khi bị bất mãn góp phần vào việc tạo dựng, thăng hoa hoặc bào mòn và phá hoại hạnh phúc lứa đôi. Phản ứng thích hợp, khéo léo đưa tới việc cải sửa của đối tượng và quân bình cán cân cho và nhận. Phản ứng không đúng cách, không đúng lúc đưa tới một chuỗi những sự trả đũa thiếu xây dựng và từ đó, làm gia tăng khoảng cách giữa hai người yêu nhau.

Một gia đình Việt Nam tiêu biểu ngày xưa là người chồng đảm đương việc bon chen ngoài xã hội, cung cấp tài chánh cho gia đình; người vợ là nội tướng thu xếp chuyện trong nhà như bếp núc, quán xuyến tài chánh, dạy dỗ, chăm nom con cái. Nếu cả hai bên hài lòng với công việc và chức năng của mình thì tức là có hạnh phúc. Trong một gia đình Việt Nam thế hệ sau này, cả hai vợ chồng thường có trình độ trí thức ngang ngửa, và cả hai người chia công việc quán xuyến nhà cửa tùy theo sự thuận tiện của thì giờ và khả năng. Nếu một trong hai cảm thấy mình bị chèn ép, thua thiệt, rồi trở nên ấm ức và bất mãn thì hạnh phúc lứa đôi bị đe dọa. Thí dụ như người vợ hy sinh, dẹp bỏ mộng ước học cao của mình để chăm lo cho con cái và để cho chồng theo đuổi sự nghiệp, có thể có những biến chuyển tâm lý ảnh hưởng đến hạnh phúc gia đình. Cũng có những gia đình mà hai vợ chồng có sự tương quan tương đối độc lập. Mỗi người theo đuổi những mộng ước riêng tư, thì giờ dành cho nhau tùy theo cảm hứng và thuận tiện.

NHỮNG MẪU NGƯỜI KHÔNG THỂ CÓ HẠNH PHÚC LỨA ÐÔI

Khoa tâm lý học nhận diện một số những rối loạn nhân cách mà những người có những rối loạn này không thể có hạnh phúc lứa đôi vì không hội đủ ba điều kiện kể trên. Những rối loạn nhân cách này ăn sâu vào bản tính của người này đến độ họ không cho rằng họ sai hay cần sửa đổi, họ cho rằng xã hội và mọi người chung quanh mới là sai và cần sửa đổi.

Những mẫu người này là:

• Nhân cách dạng đa nghi (paranoid personality disorder): người này đa nghi, bi quan, không tin ai, kể cả người mình yêu. Sự đa nghi này không có gì lay chuyển được. Người này có bề ngoài dè dặt, nghiêm chỉnh, ít cười đùa, cẩn thận, hay tránh xa người khác và đám đông. Họ có thể biết rung động vì tình, nhưng quá bận rộn với sự đa nghi nên thường thuyết phục người yêu cũng đa nghi như mình và cản trở đường tiến của người yêu. Mẫu người này tương đối khó nhận diện, vì họ che dấu sự đa nghi của họ một cách rất tài tình. Họ ít khi theo đuổi hay tán tỉnh ai. Nếu họ thông minh, học giỏi, có nhan sắc hoặc đẹp trai, họ có thể có nhiều người theo đuổi họ. Vẻ im lặng, dè dặt của họ có thể là một đặc tính thu hút người khác.

Một nhân vật tiêu biểu là nhân vật bodyguard trong phim Bodyguard do Kevin Costner đóng. Anh chàng này lúc nào cũng sẵn sàng để đối phó với kẻ gian. Anh giữ một bộ mặt lạnh lùng, nghiêm chỉnh, không để cho ai "giỡn mặt". Anh là người cận vệ của cô ca sĩ Whitney Houston. Khi cô quyến rũ anh vào vòng tình ái, thì anh cũng hưởng ứng một cách thụ động. Sau một đêm ân ái, sáng mai anh lại lạnh lùng bắt tay vào nhiệm vụ chính của anh, như không có chuyện gì xảy ra, làm cho cô Whitney Houston nổi giận cành hông. Sau khi hoàn thành nhiệm vụ, bắt được kẻ gian muốn giết chết Whitney, anh tiếp tục với công việc cận vệ của anh đối với một thân chủ mới, không chút lưu luyến cô Whitney hay có dự định tiếp tục mối tình lãng mạn này.

• Nhân cách dạng phân liệt (schizoid personality disorder): người này hoàn toàn không tha thiết đến hạnh phúc lứa đôi. Họ thoải mái sống một mình trong thế giới riêng của họ và thấy bực dọc khó chịu khi có sự hiện diện của người khác hay của đám đông. Họ hay chọn nghề làm việc có tính cách lẻ loi hơn là những việc cần sự hợp tác của nhiều người, tức là những việc thiên về kỹ thuật hơn là giao tế. Người này sẽ không đi tán tỉnh hay làm quen với người khác và sẽ không làm phiền ai. Nếu bạn đem lòng yêu người này thì bạn chỉ yêu đơn phương mà thôi. Họ sẽ né tránh bạn.
